Hyperloop Project Presented at LEDC’s Annual Summertime BBQ and General Membership Meeting

The Laredo Economic Development Corporation hosted the 2019 Annual Summertime BBQ and General Membership Meeting sponsored by AEP Texas.Special guest was Kevin Feldt, Program Manager of Transportation Planning, North Central Texas Council of Governments who presented “Transportation,Technology and Innovation Opportunities”
Kevin Feldt is a certified planner with over 25 years’ experience in both the private and public sectors.  Kevin joined the North Texas Central Texas Council of Governments in October 2008 as a Program Manager and is responsible for oversight of The North Central Texas Region’s Mobility Plan, people mover and high-speed rail projects.
Mr. Feldt explained the process and status of a federally funded study on a new mode of transportation called a hyperloop. “The hyperloop consists of moving passengers and cargo through a near-vacuum tube using electric propulsion or compartments that are magnetically levitated…without the friction from the rails and air, the hyperloop will be able to travel at speed up to 700 miles per hour”. Like riding on an airplane at 400-500 mph, the lack of friction provides a smooth ride. “A trip from Fort Worth to Laredo… would take about 48 minutes”.
Ridership has been an important consideration on the location of the hyperloop. TxDOT concluded that if the high speed rail train extended from Dallas to Monterrey, riders would double. Stops in Laredo, San Antonio, Austin, and Dallas could increase tourism and help those with families on both sides of the border.
The project is expected to take 20 years and up to 45 years to complete. “With the experimental advances in technology, the hyperloop may not be as far-fetched as it seems”, stated Laredo EDC President & CEO Olivia Varela.
