On Wednesday, September 14 at 10 a.m., Gene Lindgren, LEDC President & CEO, attended an event hosted by the Laredo Chamber of Commerce where Mayor Pete Saenz joined the University Health Transplant Institute in celebrating the reopening of its transplant clinic in our community.
The clinic’s reopening during Hispanic Heritage Month is a reminder that multicultural communities experience kidney failure at higher rates, and many people in South Texas are on dialysis or awaiting a life-saving kidney transplant.
The clinic will offer transplant patients at a location close to home where they can be evaluated prior to surgery, and for checkups following transplants at the University Health Transplant Institute in San Antonio.
Transplant Institute staff will work with referring doctors and schedule patient appointments on dates to be announced.
At the event, Mayor Saenz delivered a proclamation to the Transplant Institute. Clinic doctors talked about the importance of becoming an organ donor and why transplantation can often provide a healthy future for
patients with kidney failure.
Gene stated “this exciting event is evidence of our community’s commitment to attracting and retaining additional medical service providers. The LEDC and it’s Health Care Advisory Committee applaud the University Health Transplant Institute and will continue to support efforts to address our medically underserved community.”
